Selecting the right chalk art mediums for your project can be a difficult decision. Finding a quality product with the right surface is important. Because of the variety of chalk art mediums, it is important to determine if the substrate you are using is porous or nonporous.

Choose from nine sizes and five color combinations of the country craft framed chalkboards and chalk art mediums. Sizes offered are 8x10, 9x12, 11x14, 16x20, 18x24, 20x24, 22x28, 24x30, and 24x36. Colors include black, blue, green, red, and cherry. Contact us if you unable to find your desired style.

Porous Versus Nonporous

Porous surfaces allow the passing through of water, liquid, or vapor. Pigment from the markers could get absorbed when using porous chalkboards. These types of surfaces include chalkboard painted surfaces, wood, paper, and cardboard.

Nonporous surfaces will not absorb water and liquids. Nonporous surfaces like chalkboard labels, mirrors, glass, glazed ceramic, slate, metals, laminates, and some plastics, will result in liquid chalk being easier to remove.

Therefore, always test your liquid chalk markers on a small portion of your medium to see if they are right for your project.

Cohas Chalk Art Mediums for DIY Projects at Home, Weddings and Businesses

Strawberries drawn on Choas Eco BoardsThe Cohas Standard Chalkboards are quality boards with a texture resembling antique chalkboards. These Eco boards have a nonporous barrier, so that the liquid chalk markers will remove easily and thoroughly. They come framed or unframed and in many different sizes. Therefore, they are perfect for use in homes and businesses at parties, weddings and events!

Leave unframed and prop on an easel or choose your own frame to mount the board in.  In addition, we offer many other products that can be used for weddings, parties and home organization; all made right here in America!

Using Cohas Eco chalkboards, our artists were able to create farm market images of strawberries, apples, and pears with the waterproof 6mm markers.  Our artists also used the Zig Illumigraph markers, which are highly fluorescent and suitable for lighted signs.  These markers work with a black light and glow when light reflects or passes through them.

Creative Project Ideas and Unique Mediums

DIY Christmas Ornaments using Zig Posterman Waterproof Markers

Our artists at Cohas.com are always trying to use the Cohas Color Collection for fun projects.  The latest project involved drawing on clear plastic ornaments with the 1mm waterproof metallic gold and white markers. The flecks in the metallic paint sparkled in the lights of the tree and are nice and opaque.

Additionally, one of our artists used a metallic marker and painted on one side of a piece of acrylic glass.  The result is a colorful shiny background that can be easily cleaned with Windex.  Artists can also use spray paint to complete the same effect on the back, but that would create a more permanent background on your mediumPaint markers used on clear plastic to create a wedding favor.

Finally, Cohas offers chalk artists a wide variety of chalk mediums to create chalk artwork on. This includes our chalkboard label collection, magnet collection, slate and novelty collection, and much more.  For that reason, Cohas.com offers a large selection of wet erase menu board markers, and waterproof chalk markers.  These markers work great for chalk artist.  No doubt Cohas.com has what you are looking for.

After a decade of availability in the United States, the factory has discontinued the short Zig Posterman 30mm semi-permanent waterproof marker.  While they will continue to manufacture the black and white PMA-130S, all the other colors have gone the way of the Sinosauropteryx dinosaur.¹  This turkey size carnivore was a golden yellow and the hair iridescent like the metallic colors found in Zig Posterman markers.

The Zig Posterman 30mm Marker was Short too

Zig Posterman PMA30 short discontinued with Modified 50mm Zig Posterman to 30mm by Cohas Chalkboard Systems

Zig Posterman PMA30s (left) – Modified PMA30m by Cohas Chalkboard Systems (Right)

For some reason not disclosed, the original 30mm marker for the American market was constructed “short” in stature.  This is not unlike our 124 million year old dinosaur friend.  Customers were thrilled with the large 1-1/4 inch width paint marker.  Commercial users, including supermarkets, use them to create storefront signs.  One large home improvement center once said, “Doesn’t look like much ink,” referring the short barrel on the Biggie 30mm marker.

As we all know, in America bigger is better. This loss of a popular product got our team here at Cohas Chalkboard and Marker Systems thinking about a solution. What if we made a tool that could modify the Biggie 50 tip so it could be made any width?  Equipment fabrication and testing, along with a helpful long time customer, gave us the product.  Thanks to the Cohas development team, the Zig Posterman 30mm marker is now all grown up.

With more than two times the chalk ink as found in the PMA-130S, this modified PMA-150 Biggie goes the distance.  Testing has shown that the 50mm marker can draw a line a bit longer than a football field on some surfaces.  With a 1-1/4 inch chalk marker tip, compared to the 2 inch PMA-150, you can plan on an even longer life than the short barrel 30mm.

Artists can be a bit particular about the tools they use. In our story Chalkboard Signs Hand painted Support the Local Barber, our artist John Neil depends on the Zig Posterman 30mm marker to get just the right size letters.

What’s Next for Custom Chalk Marker Tips?

Closeup of a Zig Memory System Scroll TipLike any experiment, the mistakes and errors sometimes lead to different results. We found when engineering this new chalk marker tip we could fabricate it in any size.  Our technician was able to modify the Zig Posterman 50mm tip into any shape too! Modeling after the Zig Memory System Scroll and Brush marker, our lab did create a tip with a wide and thin section.

The 30mm modified marker is available immediately.  Select from 17 colors, all with same day shipment standard. What was first met with worry and concern, and left both our customers and staff at a loss, turned out just fine.  As a matter of fact, the solution created a better option with more value for artist and store owner alike.

The Zig Posterman scroll style modified marker is still in the lab for testing.  Subscribe to our newsletter for immediate notification of the launch!  If you have ideas for any Chalkboard, Marker, or Marketing tool or product, reach out to us.  You can do so by chat at the bottom of every page, or on our contact page 24 hours a day.

Dinosaur Chalk Art

¹Sinosauropteryx was the first fossil dinosaur to have its color scientifically established.  This according to the National Geographic reporting on a story published in the journal Nature in 2010.

Chalk art rendering of the Sinosauropteryx dinosaur used in Zig Posterman 30mm discontinued story

Our in house artist Kris took on the task of creating the Sinosauropteryx in full color chalk art. Our intent, to illustrate the extinction of the Zig Posterman 30mm “short” marker.  The work was done on a 8×10 Cohas Eco Board. She used a variety of Zig Posterman markers. The gold detail to highlight the unique iridescent “protofeathers” was created using  a 1/2mm waterproof gold marker.  To see the full impact of the reflective gold foil chalk marker, you have to view the artwork in the original form.

This is the first dinosaur Kris had ever done, let alone in the medium of chalk art.  It took about an hour and a dozen or so different color markers. Kris responded, “That wasn’t so hard, sort of like the cardinal I once made for my mother.” Why not give your hand a try at prehistoric artwork?

A new window with John Neal a professional chalkboard artist in the United Kingdom starts with him removing chalk window art from a Christmas storefront window.

“It is important to get the window quite clean, otherwise the ink will not adhere.” said John right before he starts. Here in the Zig Posterman labs we like to do our last clean on any surface with denatured alcohol. Matching the window to the shop sign he starts with a Zig Posterman waterproof Violet, or purple marker. The larger markers come in 21 different colors.

Details on Removing Chalk Window Art

We often take support calls, chats and emails on “How long will it last? Do I have to do my work inside the window?” John responds, “Not my preference at all. The ink is good enough to stay on the outside. It is too tedious for yobos (UK slang for a cruel and brutal fellow, in the US we call them pranksters) to scrape off with a finger. In fact one of my clients has a cafe in the town center & the message on his window was left on for 14 months. it just faded a bit but the main writing was still there. having said that, if you spray with a kitchen cleaner or in particular washing soda (sodium carbonate) it virtually runs off in front of your eyes.”

Once the window is cleaned by John removing chalk window art he is ready to get to work.

After the outline he adds layers of blue dark at the bottom and light in the center with white on the top of the letters, providing a nice cool reflective look to the text. After filling in the letters you just “neaten them up” by going over the edges again with violet. Zig Posterman waterproof markers will not lift when you apply them over dry marks. This provides a lot of flexibility in your artwork.

A John Neal Sign making tip and trick!

Use a Zig Posterman wet-wipe to create your guidelines. When done they can be removed with water and not affect your waterproof artwork! In the video he uses dots to provide his guide. You may want to do thin lines if just starting out with window art.

The bottom text “Finish” get’s a similar design with white highlights solid in the center and dashed radiating out the the top and the bottom. To the eye this provides a letter that pop’s out from the glass. Finishing off the letters he uses a 6mm light blue. If you pause the tape at 7:03 you will notice the tip does not have a chisel tip but a flat tip with slightly rounded edges. What John likes to do is pull out his Zig Posterman 6mm tip and turn it around. This provides a more stable 5-6 mm line as compared to trying to hold the edge of the chisel flat.

Removing Chalk Window Art, when done sign painter using a homemade compass to make a sign in a window. Circle is half done, with nice blue text above

Another trick, a homemade compass with a marker taped to one tip and a nail on the other side. This along with a suction cup makes neat little circles on the window! Something you may find doing your window artwork, people will stand and watch both inside and out of the shop!

Watch in this video as John Neal mixes font types for interest in the window, but not to much that it is confusing. Be sure to check out his website for a full length downloadable video of how to create signs and artwork with Zig Posterman markers.

What is the secret of this marker, why does it remove with Kitchen Cleaner or Windex?  According to our in-house technical expert hasaukee this is simply due to the chemical structure of the pigment based solution.  This chalk ink that makes up the fluid in the marker is safe and water soluble.  If and only if the cleaner has a pH of 10 or higher does it take action on the graphic.

This unique option perfect in preserving or removing chalk window art is not available in many markers on the market today.  Mr. Cohasaukee’s Guide to Chalk Marker Types Used With Chalkboards is helpful in making your selection.  The information is applicable to window art demonstrated in this video too.

You have never seen a Zig Posterman Big and Bold 15mm tip marker?  You have missed out on the power and grace of placing a big, bold mark on any smooth surface that has smaller dry erase markers hiding out on the tray!  We will zoom in and take a close look at the Zig Posterman 15mm tip details.  The marker is not simply 15mm it can make lines of three different widths and is ready to fill in the larger spaces.

Cohas engineering systems reviews the Zig Posterman 15mm Big and Bold Waterproof marker tip.  If you have, or are interested in a Wet-Wipe or Zig Illumigraph marker, the tips will be the same.  The difference is that those markers come off with a damp cloth, while the Waterproof marker needs Windex, Whiteboard or Zig Posterman cleaner.

Looking at the side of a Zig Posterman 15mm Tip Details with a loaded red tip

The face is a full 15mm wide, just a bit over 5/8 of an inch and is flat.

First, lets look at the face of the marker. Used to make big bold lines, the surface is what you will use most often; after all, a wide marker is what you were looking for.  The tip is made of a hard dense fiber that will hold it’s shape even on rough surfaces.  Some of our customers use their marker to create designs on grip tape for artistic skateboards.

The ink, actually a pigment based paint, fills the tip when the valve is pressed down.  Our training video on how to “Load Your Zig” provides details on this process.

Looking at the edge of a Zig Posterman 15mm Tip Details with a loaded red tip

The side is about 9mm wide, just a bit under 3/8 of an inch and is slightly rounded.

The side of the marker has a bit of a rounded or beveled profile as seen in this image.  It can be used to create thinner lines of about 9mm in width if used full on the side, or 2-5mm in width if used on the corner. How hard you press the marker will control how large your line gets when you use the corner of the 15mm Big and Bold.

If you need wider lines, Zig Posterman also come in 30mm and 50mm widths.  In 2016 the factory discontinued many of the colors available in the 30mm width marker.  Cohas Chalkboard Systems added 20, 30 and 40 mm width markers in all the available colors as a custom product.  This is modified right here in America for any project you may have.

Tip from the lab: If you need a special width or shape for some reason, cut the fiber tip with a razor knife, utility blade or Exacto knife.  Zig Posterman 15mm tip details; It is less messy if you do this before you load the tip!  Did you know, you can create a schroll brush by cutting a grove in the tip.  This will lay down two lines when your draw.

Quick review of Zig Posterman ink types

  • The ink is pigmented paint in all markers.
  • Waterproof used on any non-porous surface will not come off with rubbing or water; you must use Windex or a cleaner with a high alkaline content.
  • Wet-Wipe used on any smooth surface will not come off with rubbing unless you rub very hard.
  • Wet-Wipe will only come off with a damp cloth or with water.  Indoor use is recommended.
  • Zig Illumigraph markers are Wet-Wipe markers in extremely bright colors for application on dark surfaces.
  • Like Wet-Wipe, they only come off with a damp cloth and are recommended for indoor use.
  • Waterproof Florescent colors give the look of Zig Illumigraph but they are semi-permanent.
  • All markers are odor free and have no VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and conform to ASTM D4236.
  • All markers are permanent on porous surfaces. Use your Zig Posterman Markers with care!

Through the magic of social networking and the Cohas Chalkboard Systems United States testing Laboratories we can answer this question.  Paint Markers On Tape do they work?

Yes Chalk Markers and Paint Markers Work on Tape!

In a casual exchange with a regional social networking maven known as @MackNH on twitter, he is known for finding solutions.  Why not, in radio for decades he knows about customer service and responding to the needs of your customers.

The question came from “Cash from Your Craft” a popular blog that helps you to Follow along and share how Ralph Bagnall has marketed his hobby to create some extra income.

Pitching an idea to RustOLeum trying to come up with a chalk board tape line it did not look like a special product would be needed by Cohas Chalkboard Systems and the other Lab Technicians here in New Hampshire.  After all, Zig Posterman Markers work on chalkboards and with Chalk Board Painted items as well as any non-porous surface so a solution must be close at hand.

Checking out “Cash From Your Craft” he has done some nice cabinets with blackboard faces.  Our Cohas engineers could not help but think what a great surface this would be for our semi-permanent markers.

Paint Markers On Tape, Duct Tape

No problem with “Zigs” on the custom chalkboard tape seen in this video.  We tested that, just spray paint with “Chalk Board” paint on any brand of painters tape, then use a Zig Posterman Marker to write your name or design on the tape.  Unlike chalk, you will find the semi permanent marker will not smudge off or be affected by moisture.  It will still look like chalk too!

Our testing of paint markers on tape brought us to a roll of Gorilla Tape in the lab.  The paint markers went down with no problem, and could even be removed.  That has us wondering what applications Zig Paint Markers on Gorilla Tape have…  Could be our readers and customers will come up with some new ideas.

A yellow design on Black Duct Tape, coming off on removal.

We did find if you removed the tape after painting on it the marker flaked off.  So be sure to apply your Gorilla Tape first then add your Zig Posterman Paint Marker decoration.’

The window paintings of DAfrOg’s aRtwOrk are amazing. While these snowmen won’t melt when it get’s warm they are removed from time to time. As David Frontin, the hand behind the said recently on Facebook, “The thing that motivates me is that as these decorations are temporary and will be removed in a short time and the challenge is to do better every time.”  Paint marker window art can be easy to do but it does take some planning.

Before and After, DAfrOg like most artists like to sketch up the concepts first. You can often see it taped to the glass while they work.

While we don’t have a shot of David you can head over to his Facebook Page DAfrOg’s aRtwOrk and see his illustration Icon clearly a caricature of himself. No worries anyways, since likely this view is the one you will see of him most often. His back to the crowd, focused and working an another storefront window.

Paint Marker Window Art on the Move!

We chased “DAfrOg” from France to England this December.  We were trying to arrange his latest delivery of Zig Posterman markers from us. In the end we had the package delivered to his home base in Trois Mares Reunion, France.  He told us he works with traditional art materials but finds that the Zig Posterman waterproof markers are faster and can allow him to do more windows in a shorter amount of time.

David said it all in his January cover photo, “I’ll have your windows decorated anywhere in the world.”

In the store front image the artist is using a 2mm bullet tip marker. Bullet tip markers are perfect for adding medium waterproof lines and lettering to your storefront artwork chalkboards, whiteboards, and other nonporous surfaces. Waterproof ink won’t run or wash away, perfect for using indoors or out on glass, plastic, metal, stone and more! We offer 23 colors here on the Cohas Chalkboard Systems website.

Are you looking for a different method to create fun pumpkins this year for Halloween? Usually the whole day is spent carving out witches, ghosts, and scary jack-o-lantern designs on various sizes of pumpkins. After looking around the web painting pumpkins seemed like a good idea. With Zig Posterman Markers we were able to create paint marker pumpkins in minutes without the fear of knives or the mess.

You will want to use markers no larger than 6mm for anything detailed. Kids might be able to use 15mm markers on a larger pumpkin to make faces. The grasp of the marker is easy for kids to use. The result is not messy, like painting with a traditional brush and paint. In addition the 15mm can be used to create background color.

Be sure to use the Waterproof Zig Posterman Markers since you may be displaying your pumpkins outside.  These markers are manufactured waterproof and will not come off in the rain!

Wash and dry the pumpkin before adding any paint. Add the paint in layers if you intend to use multiple colors. Apply the background color first and allow this color to dry for about 10 min or so, or until dry to the touch. Then you can add the foreground color right on top of your previous color. You may want to use a variety of tips. The black and yellow on this pumpkin were done with a big and broad chisel tip and the white was done with a 2mm bullet tip. If make a mistake or decide you don’t like your design, you can wipe the pumpkin clean with ammonia based cleaner such as Windex and start all over.

Two Fun Halloween Paint Marker Pumpkins made using Zig Posterman MarkersUse any color on your pumpkin since they are very opaque, consequently you can not see through the marks that are made!

This little sugar pumpkin was picked up at one of the 5 local farms within 5 minutes of the Cohas Chalkboard Studios. If you get a chance to come to New England be sure to visit us. We are just 45 miles north of Boston.

Important Safety information!

Be sure that if you use Paint Markers for your paint marker pumpkins with children that they carry the AP seal and they are are certified to contain no materials that are toxic or injurious to children.

Most of all you should also be sure that the caps comply to a safety standard that reduces the risk of asphyxiation.

Paint markers are a bit different from the magic marker, dry erase marker or sharpie marker you may be used to.  The advantages are priceless but they need a little preparation and care to last a long time.  Follow these simple instructions for your waterproof or wet-wipe Zig Paint Marker.

Zig Posterman paint markers are made with a safe solution of water and pigment.  Pigment is a ground up powder that delivers the color to your wall, artwork, window, sign or board.  This powder is what makes the paint long lasting in the sun.  The pigment is UV resistant and will last for months or more outside.  The waterproof version will even last through rain, sleet and snow!  Learn more about pigment in our story on “The Secret world of the Chalk Marker” here on Cohas Chalkboard systems and Marker DIY section.

Shake your Zig Paint Marker

The first thing you will notice if you are preparing your paint marker for use is it will make a sound like a paint can.  This is because it has a small ball inside the marker.  It is important to shake up the marker for two to three minutes before you use it the first time.  Leave the cap on and shake to agitate the ball in the marker.   Do not prime your marker before you shake it up.  If you do the solution will be to thin and run down onto and off the nib.  This will cause the marker to appear to “leak” since the thin fluid will run from the nib into the cap.

Instructions for Priming a Zig Posterman MarkerWhat if I forgot to shake the marker?

If you did not shake it the first time, or did not shake before you used your marker you may need to clear the tip of the thin paint fluid.  First do not pump the marker, use the nib, all sides, to draw on paper or plastic.  Try to get as much thin fluid off the tip as you can.

Blot the tip with a paper towel so it is dry.

Now cap the marker press firmly on the cap till it snaps on. Shake the marker for three minutes, just like a paint can.  Shake in different directions and roll it around as you shake.  You will hear the paint ball moving inside of the marker.  If you need to rinse the cap out to clean it do so with water for wet-wipe or Windex for Waterproof.

Now prime the tip by pressing it down and watching for ink flow.  Once the ink is flowing on your scrap paper or plastic do some doodles or practice a little.  The ink in your tip may still be to thin.  Move to a new scrap paper or plastic and try a design, if it looks good?  Let’s get creative!

Prime your Zig Paint Marker

Now prime the marker after shaking for two to three minutes to do this press down on the tip until you see the ink begin to flow.  Our video How to Fill and Prime a Zig Paint Marker can show you what it will look like when you are priming it.  The video is of a Zig Posterman Waterproof marker, so the cleaning information relates to that type of marker. For the Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe and Zig Illumigraph use water, a damp cloth for cleanup.

When you draw apply the pressure you need to create your design.  You do not want to heavy a hand as it will wear the nib and cause more paint to flow to the tip.  When you need more paint just press down for a moment.

Storing your Zig Paint Marker

While not required and optional you may want to blot the tip dry with a paper towel before storing your marker. Depending on how much the marker was “loaded” while working on your project or art, cleaning is a good idea before storage. Do not use water or another fluid, just a dry clean paper towel blot the tip without pressing down the valve.

Time to put Zig to bed!  When you are done with your marker cap it tight be sure the cap snaps on tightly.  The 1mm, 2mm, 6mm and 15 mm markers have a two stage locking cap, be sure you press it all the way on.  The Biggie markers have a foam seal around the edge of the cap.  Make sure the cap is tight and engaged in the locking tabs on the side of the marker for the 30-50mm Zig Paint Marker.

Now time for a very important step.  Zig Posterman and Zig Illumigraph markers must be stored on their side.  Do not put them upright tip up or tip down into a cup or holder.  Most orders ship in a very sturdy box intended for storage when not in use.  Inside you will likely find our little friend Zig, sleeping with his tight cap laying flat on his bed and dreaming of playing with dog max.

If you have any questions on paint markers how to use and store them please use our contact page.  We would be happy to help, even if your order was not from us.

Rickland Surfboards did this how to video for using paint markers on a surfboard.  Start with masking the surfboard then fill in your lines.  Paint Markers for Surfboards make a great tool for the job.  Created before the Zig Posterman Biggie markers were widely available Rick uses Posca Markers and the Zig Woodcraft marker.  The Woodcraft marker is the same formulation as Zig Posterman markers providing a semi-permanent mark that can be removed with Windex.  When the board is complete it is painted with a clear coat making it permanent.

As you watch the video think how the Zig Posterman Biggie in 30mm or 50mm, up to 2 inches wide could have speed up the manufacture of this surf board.  To “fix” your image to any piece of three dimensional artwork use an acrylic clear coat.  Spray is recommended, Zig Posterman Paint Markers for Surfboards will not smear when overcoated. No lifting will occur when you add a clear coat.  Mat finish or gloss both work fine it is up to you and what your final application of your artwork may be.

Just a big bold note on the car window, or the price on a real good deal, paint markers are a great solution to tell others you are ready to sell! Available in different sizes, you don’t have to be an expert to letter or decorate your motor vehicle windows. Car Dealer Paint Markers come in many colors and sizes here at Cohas Systems, the most used are those larger than 15mm.

The markers used on this car included the 5/8 of an inch (15mm) Big and Broad Zig Posterman Marker and the Biggie 30.  The Big and Broad paint marker was used to draw the year and other white text. The Biggie 30 was used to create the price listed in red.

Honda Pilot for Sale using Zig Posterman Car Dealer Paint MarkersThe Big and Broad has a wide tip with an edge that is about 1/4 inch  wide.  The wide tip was used to draw the text, “Honda Pilot” in one stroke.  The edge of the white marker was used to create the keys.  To make the year, about three strokes were used to create the one inch wide letters.  The ink takes about a minute to dry, and can be drawn over, or next to without affecting the original marks.

Changes can be made while the mark is wet by rubbing with your finger or a paper towel.

The red price was made with the short barrel 1 1/4 inch (30mm) marker.  By holding the back of the container in your palm you can create clean wide numbers, letters and symbols.

With this car the tinted windows work well with the lighter colored markers.  The marks will not come off in the rain, they can only be removed with Windex cleaner.

Recommended Car Dealer Paint Markers for this project
