After a decade of availability in the United States, the factory has discontinued the short Zig Posterman 30mm semi-permanent waterproof marker.  While they will continue to manufacture the black and white PMA-130S, all the other colors have gone the way of the Sinosauropteryx dinosaur.¹  This turkey size carnivore was a golden yellow and the hair iridescent like the metallic colors found in Zig Posterman markers.

The Zig Posterman 30mm Marker was Short too

For some reason not disclosed, the original 30mm marker for the American market was constructed “short” in stature.  This is not unlike our 124 million year old dinosaur friend.  Customers were thrilled with the large 1-1/4 inch width paint marker.  Commercial users, including supermarkets, use them to create storefront signs.  One large home improvement center once said, “Doesn’t look like much ink,” referring the short barrel on the Biggie 30mm marker.

As we all know, in America bigger is better. This loss of a popular product got our team here at Cohas Chalkboard and Marker Systems thinking about a solution. What if we made a tool that could modify the Biggie 50 tip so it could be made any width?  Equipment fabrication and testing, along with a helpful long time customer, gave us the product.  Thanks to the Cohas development team, the Zig Posterman 30mm marker is now all grown up.

With more than two times the chalk ink as found in the PMA-130S, this modified PMA-150 Biggie goes the distance.  Testing has shown that the 50mm marker can draw a line a bit longer than a football field on some surfaces.  With a 1-1/4 inch chalk marker tip, compared to the 2 inch PMA-150, you can plan on an even longer life than the short barrel 30mm.

Artists can be a bit particular about the tools they use. In our story Chalkboard Signs Hand painted Support the Local Barber, our artist John Neil depends on the Zig Posterman 30mm marker to get just the right size letters.

What’s Next for Custom Chalk Marker Tips?

Closeup of a Zig Memory System Scroll TipLike any experiment, the mistakes and errors sometimes lead to different results. We found when engineering this new chalk marker tip we could fabricate it in any size.  Our technician was able to modify the Zig Posterman 50mm tip into any shape too! Modeling after the Zig Memory System Scroll and Brush marker, our lab did create a tip with a wide and thin section.

The 30mm modified marker is available immediately.  Select from 17 colors, all with same day shipment standard. What was first met with worry and concern, and left both our customers and staff at a loss, turned out just fine.  As a matter of fact, the solution created a better option with more value for artist and store owner alike.

The Zig Posterman scroll style modified marker is still in the lab for testing.  Subscribe to our newsletter for immediate notification of the launch!  If you have ideas for any Chalkboard, Marker, or Marketing tool or product, reach out to us.  You can do so by chat at the bottom of every page, or on our contact page 24 hours a day.

Dinosaur Chalk Art

¹Sinosauropteryx was the first fossil dinosaur to have its color scientifically established.  This according to the National Geographic reporting on a story published in the journal Nature in 2010.

Chalk art rendering of the Sinosauropteryx dinosaur used in Zig Posterman 30mm discontinued story

Our in house artist Kris took on the task of creating the Sinosauropteryx in full color chalk art. Our intent, to illustrate the extinction of the Zig Posterman 30mm “short” marker.  The work was done on a 8×10 Cohas Eco Board. She used a variety of Zig Posterman markers. The gold detail to highlight the unique iridescent “protofeathers” was created using  a 1/2mm waterproof gold marker.  To see the full impact of the reflective gold foil chalk marker, you have to view the artwork in the original form.

This is the first dinosaur Kris had ever done, let alone in the medium of chalk art.  It took about an hour and a dozen or so different color markers. Kris responded, “That wasn’t so hard, sort of like the cardinal I once made for my mother.” Why not give your hand a try at prehistoric artwork?

You have never seen a Zig Posterman Big and Bold 15mm tip marker?  You have missed out on the power and grace of placing a big, bold mark on any smooth surface that has smaller dry erase markers hiding out on the tray!  We will zoom in and take a close look at the Zig Posterman 15mm tip details.  The marker is not simply 15mm it can make lines of three different widths and is ready to fill in the larger spaces.

Cohas engineering systems reviews the Zig Posterman 15mm Big and Bold Waterproof marker tip.  If you have, or are interested in a Wet-Wipe or Zig Illumigraph marker, the tips will be the same.  The difference is that those markers come off with a damp cloth, while the Waterproof marker needs Windex, Whiteboard or Zig Posterman cleaner.

Looking at the side of a Zig Posterman 15mm Tip Details with a loaded red tip

The face is a full 15mm wide, just a bit over 5/8 of an inch and is flat.

First, lets look at the face of the marker. Used to make big bold lines, the surface is what you will use most often; after all, a wide marker is what you were looking for.  The tip is made of a hard dense fiber that will hold it’s shape even on rough surfaces.  Some of our customers use their marker to create designs on grip tape for artistic skateboards.

The ink, actually a pigment based paint, fills the tip when the valve is pressed down.  Our training video on how to “Load Your Zig” provides details on this process.

Looking at the edge of a Zig Posterman 15mm Tip Details with a loaded red tip

The side is about 9mm wide, just a bit under 3/8 of an inch and is slightly rounded.

The side of the marker has a bit of a rounded or beveled profile as seen in this image.  It can be used to create thinner lines of about 9mm in width if used full on the side, or 2-5mm in width if used on the corner. How hard you press the marker will control how large your line gets when you use the corner of the 15mm Big and Bold.

If you need wider lines, Zig Posterman also come in 30mm and 50mm widths.  In 2016 the factory discontinued many of the colors available in the 30mm width marker.  Cohas Chalkboard Systems added 20, 30 and 40 mm width markers in all the available colors as a custom product.  This is modified right here in America for any project you may have.

Tip from the lab: If you need a special width or shape for some reason, cut the fiber tip with a razor knife, utility blade or Exacto knife.  Zig Posterman 15mm tip details; It is less messy if you do this before you load the tip!  Did you know, you can create a schroll brush by cutting a grove in the tip.  This will lay down two lines when your draw.

Quick review of Zig Posterman ink types

  • The ink is pigmented paint in all markers.
  • Waterproof used on any non-porous surface will not come off with rubbing or water; you must use Windex or a cleaner with a high alkaline content.
  • Wet-Wipe used on any smooth surface will not come off with rubbing unless you rub very hard.
  • Wet-Wipe will only come off with a damp cloth or with water.  Indoor use is recommended.
  • Zig Illumigraph markers are Wet-Wipe markers in extremely bright colors for application on dark surfaces.
  • Like Wet-Wipe, they only come off with a damp cloth and are recommended for indoor use.
  • Waterproof Florescent colors give the look of Zig Illumigraph but they are semi-permanent.
  • All markers are odor free and have no VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and conform to ASTM D4236.
  • All markers are permanent on porous surfaces. Use your Zig Posterman Markers with care!

Spring has sprung and that means it is time for barbecues! Here in this video, John Neal the sign writer creates a chalkboard for Aubrey Allen Butcher’s using markers and paint.  The Zig Posterman Chalkboard Art will bring customers in much more than a machine printed poster on a sandwich board.  While customers may be interested in the tasty BBQ offered by Aubrey Allen the Butcher, they will also stop and admire unique chalkboard art more often than you may think.

Starting the Zig Posterman Chalkboard Art Project

First, John added the letters “BBQ” to the board with a light pencil mark. In our studios we like to use a Violet Zig Illumigraph marker because it can be removed by rubbing when you are done or by using a damp cloth. After, John uses a 30mm White Zig Posterman marker for the base, adding color on top of once it drys. You can use a hair dryer, or if it is a nice day like in this video it will air dry very quickly.

Zig Posterman Chalkboard Art Butchers BoardHe then uses a 6mm White Zig Posterman marker for the small lettering. Don’t worry about overlapping where you can use a black marker to clean it up after you are done. John then adds the colors Red, Orange and Yellow to the letters, adding a “firey” affect using a Big and Broad 15mm marker. Starting with red at the top, followed by orange and yellow. While it is still wet, he uses his finger to rub in the colors to smooth out the red to orange. Moving quickly, he adds the yellow and smooths it out into the orange which is also followed by white.

The next step he uses a broad chisel 6mm white and red marker to outline the letters and add affects. The next step, he uses a 15mm Red and White marker to make charcoal under the BBQ. John then uses the Violet Zig Illumigraph marker to add 5 sections of 2 lines for an outline of where he will list the items using a small paint brush, and alternate colors. Notice how he dabs the marker on a flat service to get the paint. To clean up the chalkboard John uses Black paint to make it as good as new!

The amazing skill of John Wren Sign Board Artist creates chalk board art, with paint marker color overlay. The Zig Posterman Marker is great for complex designs like this since once dry you can write over the marks without damaging the work you have already done.

Ever write over a dry erase marker and find it destroys the mark? That won’t happen with these unique markers available in many sizes, colors and finishes!  The opaque matte finish Zig Posterman Calk Marker allows the artist to put color on color in any display.

How to Create Paint Marker Color Overlay

To start the artist letters in “Meals from around the world” using a 15 millimeter Zig Posterman Marker.  That’s 5/8 inch for us yanks’ he then adds a brown drop shadow. Finishing with 6mm chisel tip white highlights and brown with some neon drop shadow. This is a technique anyone could use, just watch the video and give it a try yourself.

Notice the guidelines in light chalk on this board.  Those can be removed when done, with an eraser, your Zig Posterman marks will not smudge or smear.

John then uses a Zig 15mm marker to create a green oval shape looking a lot like a football here in the United States. Watch carefully as this part is in fast motion, he creates the outside of the oval with the green. He then switches to the white 15mm marker to create a gradient and a 3d affect.

Editors Note:

I could not help but notice the frame that John Wren is using, the saw marks can be seen on this clearly recycled wood that come from a vertical saw. Likely from a time before neon and LED full motion signs.  In the United Kingdom and here in the United States these distinctive saw marks date the wood between 1700 and 1860.  How quaint that the sign artist is able to use old wood on an old school chalkart sign.

Then after the oval has dried in this video he uses a clear acrylic varnish to “fix” the paint so it will have no chance of running with the future layers he plans to ad.  Depending on your design you may not need this method for paint marker color overlay.  The reason for this is Zig Posterman semi-permanent markers can be drawn over when dry.  Test your design to determine the best option for your application.  If the marker does not dry fast enough you can use heat to cure it.

Detail Time After the Color Overlay

Following the shape of the oval a pop-out 3d affect is created, this is a plan ahead project, you don’t want to run out of room for your letters. Silver and black highlights or in the case of black more appropriately shadows are added by John to give even more of a perspective.  Layering the Zig Posterman marker on top of an existing mark is no problem.  In this video he could have completely recovered the white “World” text, but instead highlights the center.

Using the guidelines text is added to the blackboard. “Try a different dish every week” in this case the text is gone over twice for that nice bright white on the blackboard. Even if think you can not letter that well give it a try! The Zig 6mm chisel tip markers give a nice look to hand written text, almost a calligraphy marker look.

In the end making sure with a tape measure our artist adds “This Week and Next Week” with a nice simple parchment box framing what will soon be the specials on this restaurant board.

Here’s a tip on Paint Marker Color Overlay!

Now that you have your board done, you can add your specials to the menu board and change it every week!  Use the Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe markers so you can wipe the board clean with a damp cloth.  Your menu board design will not come off because you need Windex to make that happen.  Why not try the over 23 different colors of the Zig Posterman waterpoof Marker? Or test the Wet-Wipe marker for indoor applications with 27 colors and three tip sizes.

The call came in like many do, “We need IdeaPaint Chalk Markers will your markers work on IdeaPaint?” We have reports from many customers one as far away as Australia using them so “Sure they will work for you.” An easy answer, but our recommendation became a bit cautious for a few reasons.

Explaining the best product for IdeaPaint is the Zig Illumigraph marker we started to review the darker colors like violet, red and blue. Noah Lydiard of PJA Advertising and Marketing started asking if we had any lighter colors. He then explained that this was a clear IdeaPaint wall over a green painted wall. This key lime green wall would make an outstanding palette for all the ZigPosterman Colors.

Noah was looking for wide bold markers, something that would be highly opaque and have wide tips. The advantage with Illumigrpaph is that they can be removed with a damp cloth or even wiped off of IdeaPaint with a soft rag. A nice option in the office or home, plus they come as wide as 2 inches.

A Violet 50mm Zig Illumigrpah marker drawing a driping line on a IdeaPaint Wall, IdeaPaint Chalk Markers

PJA also wanted some dark colors, though not available in the Illumigraph they are available in the Zig-Posterman Wet-Wipe marker. He opted to add Black Blue and Brown in 15mm to all the 50 and 15mm Illumigraph colors offered.

Flourescent Zig Illumigrpah paint on a lime green idea paint wall the design is drippingPausing for a moment in our conversation on his project… Even taking a deep breath when the next statement came up. “We just painted the wall today, (Thursday) the artists set up to come in at the beginning of the next week.” It is recommended by the manufacture of IdeaPaint that the wall dry for three days.  The cure should be a bit longer with ZigPosterman markers.  This is important since the water based Wet-Wipes are removed with a damp cloth.  The fluid can soak into the drywall if it is not sealed and has dried well.

Willing to take the chance Noah at PAJ and Steve Young here at Cohas Chalkboard Systems put together the order. Out it went Friday night UPS ground for delivery to the PJA Advertising and Marketing firm in Cambridge Monday.

Starting with a blank green wall coated with IdeaPaint Clear, artists Josh Falk and Matthew Zaremba create IdeaPaint chalk markers bold radiating lines with the Zig Illumigraph 50mm marker in violet. Surprising us the next color laid down was Yellow while watching the video for the first time. A technician in the lab screamed, “wait, wait, wait” when the artist was pressing down on the marker causing it to drip and run. While not a normal use we just waited for the video to run and the art to develop.

Artists remove Zig Illumigraph paint marker cleanly from a IdeaPaint wallBlending with a water spray and paper towel the next step was to mask of sections of the design. Then the magic of Zigs and IdeaPaint came out. Josh and Matthew cleaned the marker off the IdeaPaint coated wall with a damp cloth. Some of the marker paint was thick from layers in the design. In the end it was 100% clean with no ghosting or marks.  After that the cleaned area received a solid coating of red Zig Illumigraph marker with a Biggie 50 2 inch marker.

Then a surprise came, after coating the large solid triangles in the design they let the Zig Illumigrpaph marker paint dry. Using an eraser on the end of a pencil the Illumigraph marks were selectively removed to inscribe the message “Nurture the Things that Interest You…”

Unlike dry erase markers, not everyone knows the details of the paint marker. You won’t find them in office supply stores; you may have never even seen one!

To make it even more confusing, paint markers are sometimes called chalk markers or wet-erase markers and come in several different types. Our “Zig Markers” come in three varieties and up to seven different sizes; three different finish types and as many as 50 colors!

This application note will help explain the types of markers offered and what they can be used for, as well as the best marker for your mission.

Waterproof Paint Marker

These markers are most often used outdoors, as they will not come off in the rain. Use them on car windows, on the painted part of a car, plastic, glass, aluminum, steel and stone; any surface that is not porous will accept the marker. They work well on chalkboards and look like chalk when dry.

Even though they make a strong bold mark, they are semi-permanent and can be removed with Windex. The marks made are resistant to UV light, so they will not fade.

Typical Applications

  • Store Window Signs
  • A-Frame Signs
  • Sidewalk Signs
  • Police Markers (for parking violations or Marking a disabled car)
  • Decorating Car Windows or the Car
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Marking Glass or Ceramics
  • Home Decor
  • Fast Pitch Signs
  • Chalk Board Art
  • White Board for semi-permanent application
  • Skateboard Art Excellent on Grip Tape
  • Helmets, Headphones, Computers and Footwear
  • Canvas and Fine Art

The marker will not “lift” when you re-coat after drying. The same color or different colors can be used next to each other with no bleeding or streaking. Just let the paint dry for 1-2 minutes before adding the next color.

On paper, canvas, cloth or other porous surfaces, the paint marker leaves a nice matte finish; an opaque mark that is permanent and light-fast. Artist will find they can create giant size calligraphy with the larger markers.

Sizes AvailableWindex shown with four sizes of Paint Marker available at Cohas.com

This type of marker only removes with Windex, Zig Posterman Cleaner or most whiteboard cleaners. The Windex must have ammonia to work.  The chemical properties needed in the cleaner for removal is a pH of 10 or higher.

The waterproof paint marker is compatible with dry erase and wet erase markers on the same board.  When removing the dry erase marker with an eraser, the waterproof mark will not remove.

Other Waterproof paint markers offered by Zig Posterman include Woodcraft and Acrylista, both of these are the same formulation as the Zig Posterman Waterproof but offer more colors.

 Wet-Wipe Paint Marker

Used on glass, plastic, blackboards, stone, whiteboards and any non-porous surface, these paint markers will always come off with a damp cloth or sponge.

Often used for menus in restaurants or special boards, they are easy to change.  Just wash away the item you would like to change.

Typical Applications

  • Store Signs
  • POP displays
  • Table, Counter or Bar Top displays
  • Arts and Crafts when easy removal is required
  • Child artwork on counters or glass
  • Chalk Board Art
  • White Board for easy to use, “erase when dry” applications
  • Menu Boards
  • Wedding and Function Message Boards
  • Kitchen Menu Boards

Use as a Dry Erase Marker?

The most often used search on Cohas.com is “Wide Dry-Erase Marker”. The question is, can the wide Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe marker be used on a dry erase board?

In one word, yes!

The wet-wipe Zig Posterman (along with the Illumigraph) is the most like a dry erase marker. It is however very opaque, unlike a dry erase marker. The mark will be bold and strong on your boards, not transparent and thin.  Simply removed with water and a damp cloth or sponge.   It will not damage your whiteboard and always clean completely off your board.

Sizes Available

  • Bullet Tip 2mm
  • Broad Chisel 6mm
  • Big and Broad 15mm
  • Biggie 30 30mm (Black and White Only) Other Colors Factory discontinued January 2017

Looking for a wide marker to use on your IdeaPaint walls? The Wet-Wipe is a great option and can be cleaned with a damp cloth or sponge.  This will remove the marks even if your surface has slight defects in it.

The wet-wipe should not be used outdoors since it will come off in the rain.  It does take 1-2 minutes to dry, not as fast as a dry erase marker.  The Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe will come off cleaner than dry erase markers from dry erase boards. We have never seen staining on a white board that happens with poor quality dry erase markers.

 Zig Illumigraph Paint Marker

This is the same ink type as Wet-Wipe in how it functions.  The colors are very fluorescent, especially under black-light, lights at night or on a LED board. Dark surfaces look best with this product. The appearance can be described as a true neon line when on a lighted board like a back-lit menu board or a LED Flashing Board.

This paint marker will not damage your acrylic menu board surface and can be removed by rubbing with a soft cloth. Any stubborn marks, or if the item you are using it on has scratches or micro scratching, can be removed with a damp sponge or cloth.

A simple dry ersase eraser in Black wih a gray felt base, used to remove Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe marks from a paint marker

Zig Illumigraph Markers work very well with Dry Erasers

When used on your boards, there’s no need to take them down to change them. Unlike the inexpensive markers, these high quality paint markers will not run when you load the tip. No more dripping and dribbling down the board!

If your LED Flashing board came with markers, you will not believe the performance of the Zig Illumigraph markers when you replace them. Not only are the marks cleaner and brighter, they are also available in wider sizes allowing for big bold messages!

Typical Applications

  • Blacklight Environments
  • LED Flashing Boards
  • Table, Counter or Bar Top displays on Black Backgrounds
  • Chalk Board Art
  • Blackboard Chalk Marker for Easy to Use, “Erase When Dry” Applications
  • Menu Boards
  • Wedding and Function Message Boards Super Bright on Dark Surfaces
  • Nightclub, Hotel, Restaurant and Lounge Displays

Once dry, the marks are easy to change; perfect for price changes or changing the special of the day on your message board.

The Zig Illumigraph Marker should not be used outdoors since it will come off in the rain. The marker is water based ink with a pigment; use care around energized electronic devices. Unplug your LED Flashing or Light Board before use and allow ink to dry.  Follow the manufactures recommendation on your writing surfaces.

Dry Erase ~ Wet Erase Tip

The Zig Posterman Illumigraph works well on Dry Erase Boards and menu boards, then when dry is removed with a soft cloth or fiber eraser.  You should always let the “ink” dry 1-2 minutes before removing.  This will keep from smearing the marks that you have made on the board.  If the marks do not come off your board it may have a softer surface than most whiteboards, in this case a damp cloth will clean away the marks with no damage to the board.

While the markers do not have the typical “Expo Colors” try the red, orange and violet markers on your whiteboard.  The marks will turn to dust when you wipe them.

Marker Safety

Pigment based solution is water based, has no odor, no VOC’s and are non-toxic.  The markers conform to EU product safety regulations for children.

Zig Posterman markers come in sizes from a fine tip to a full two inches wide.  They are paint markers filled with a water pigment paint with no odor or volatile organic compounds.  Since they are paint based markers they have a small ball inside the barrel to mix the paint.  They also have a valve at the bottom in order to keep the paint from flowing out of the marker until you need it.  You must prime Zig Posterman marker before it is used.

This video shows the larger markers offered here on the Zig Posterman website.  The two easy steps to starting the marker are demonstrated, shake, press and draw!

The extra wide 50mm Biggies provided large brush strokes over very opaque white Chalk for the flag field on the top of the car.  Though this video shows a nice heavy first coat going down, remember you can go over the marks again once they are dry.

These “Zig Girls” finished the car roof and added support to the windows before the game.

According to this pair the car “was rained on, jet washed, and went through a car wash! Yet they stayed on!” The sign was removed with Zig Posterman Chalkboard Cleaner.

World Cup, Zig Posterman Car Painting with Paint Markers

Products used in this video, Biggie 50mm White Marker and the Big and Broad 15mm Red Marker to start the red lines. A Biggie 30mm red Marker was used to fill in the red lines.

While the factory has discontinued the Biggie 30mm waterproof in all colors except for white and black, Cohas has a solution.  In January of 2017 we will offer all colors available in the Zig Posterman waterproof line in 20, 30 and 40 mm sizes.  These are long barrel markers with 50ml of ink in them, a great solution and a better value.  Exclusively here in the Zig Posterman marker store on the Cohas Chalkboard Systems website.

Technical tips on Zig Posterman Car Painting

Note; This information added January 2017.

First and foremost, check your car for suitability.  If your car is older, has been left out in the sun or has a “chalky” appearance to the paint please test in a inconspicuous spot first.  A good coating of paste wax or liquid wax is a good idea before you start.

The markers will not come off in the rain however, we have seen failure in some specific conditions.  Follow this checklist to be sure you obtain the best results when Zig Posterman car painting.

  • Clean and wash the car thoroughly.
  • If possible use denatured alcohol to prep the surface.
  • Wax the surface.
  • Apply only when the car is dry and temps are above 60 degrees.
  • Avoid bringing the car from the cold to a warm garage, the car will sweat, the markers will fail in the next rain.
  • Test first.  You do not want to stain the paint on your car.
  • If uncomfortable about using on your paint, use on the windows of your car.
  • Removal must be with a cleaner that has a pH of 10 or higher, like Windex with ammonia.
  • Do not expect a car wash to remove the design, also expect some touch-up will be required.
  • If you drive in an area with snow, the marker will not come off, even with salt and sand.
  • Once exposed to road dust, dirt, sand and salt, if rubbed the marks will remove with water.

Have fun! This is great for car shows and concerts.  Be sure to read our story about “No Shoes Nation Zig Posterman on a Truck” our customer John Snyder was even escorted backstage when he showed up in his Zig Posterman decorated truck!
