Through the magic of social networking and the Cohas Chalkboard Systems United States testing Laboratories we can answer this question.  Paint Markers On Tape do they work?

Yes Chalk Markers and Paint Markers Work on Tape!

In a casual exchange with a regional social networking maven known as @MackNH on twitter, he is known for finding solutions.  Why not, in radio for decades he knows about customer service and responding to the needs of your customers.

The question came from “Cash from Your Craft” a popular blog that helps you to Follow along and share how Ralph Bagnall has marketed his hobby to create some extra income.

Pitching an idea to RustOLeum trying to come up with a chalk board tape line it did not look like a special product would be needed by Cohas Chalkboard Systems and the other Lab Technicians here in New Hampshire.  After all, Zig Posterman Markers work on chalkboards and with Chalk Board Painted items as well as any non-porous surface so a solution must be close at hand.

Checking out “Cash From Your Craft” he has done some nice cabinets with blackboard faces.  Our Cohas engineers could not help but think what a great surface this would be for our semi-permanent markers.

Paint Markers On Tape, Duct Tape

No problem with “Zigs” on the custom chalkboard tape seen in this video.  We tested that, just spray paint with “Chalk Board” paint on any brand of painters tape, then use a Zig Posterman Marker to write your name or design on the tape.  Unlike chalk, you will find the semi permanent marker will not smudge off or be affected by moisture.  It will still look like chalk too!

Our testing of paint markers on tape brought us to a roll of Gorilla Tape in the lab.  The paint markers went down with no problem, and could even be removed.  That has us wondering what applications Zig Paint Markers on Gorilla Tape have…  Could be our readers and customers will come up with some new ideas.

A yellow design on Black Duct Tape, coming off on removal.

We did find if you removed the tape after painting on it the marker flaked off.  So be sure to apply your Gorilla Tape first then add your Zig Posterman Paint Marker decoration.’

Rickland Surfboards did this how to video for using paint markers on a surfboard.  Start with masking the surfboard then fill in your lines.  Paint Markers for Surfboards make a great tool for the job.  Created before the Zig Posterman Biggie markers were widely available Rick uses Posca Markers and the Zig Woodcraft marker.  The Woodcraft marker is the same formulation as Zig Posterman markers providing a semi-permanent mark that can be removed with Windex.  When the board is complete it is painted with a clear coat making it permanent.

As you watch the video think how the Zig Posterman Biggie in 30mm or 50mm, up to 2 inches wide could have speed up the manufacture of this surf board.  To “fix” your image to any piece of three dimensional artwork use an acrylic clear coat.  Spray is recommended, Zig Posterman Paint Markers for Surfboards will not smear when overcoated. No lifting will occur when you add a clear coat.  Mat finish or gloss both work fine it is up to you and what your final application of your artwork may be.

Unlike dry erase markers, not everyone knows the details of the paint marker. You won’t find them in office supply stores; you may have never even seen one!

To make it even more confusing, paint markers are sometimes called chalk markers or wet-erase markers and come in several different types. Our “Zig Markers” come in three varieties and up to seven different sizes; three different finish types and as many as 50 colors!

This application note will help explain the types of markers offered and what they can be used for, as well as the best marker for your mission.

Waterproof Paint Marker

These markers are most often used outdoors, as they will not come off in the rain. Use them on car windows, on the painted part of a car, plastic, glass, aluminum, steel and stone; any surface that is not porous will accept the marker. They work well on chalkboards and look like chalk when dry.

Even though they make a strong bold mark, they are semi-permanent and can be removed with Windex. The marks made are resistant to UV light, so they will not fade.

Typical Applications

  • Store Window Signs
  • A-Frame Signs
  • Sidewalk Signs
  • Police Markers (for parking violations or Marking a disabled car)
  • Decorating Car Windows or the Car
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Marking Glass or Ceramics
  • Home Decor
  • Fast Pitch Signs
  • Chalk Board Art
  • White Board for semi-permanent application
  • Skateboard Art Excellent on Grip Tape
  • Helmets, Headphones, Computers and Footwear
  • Canvas and Fine Art

The marker will not “lift” when you re-coat after drying. The same color or different colors can be used next to each other with no bleeding or streaking. Just let the paint dry for 1-2 minutes before adding the next color.

On paper, canvas, cloth or other porous surfaces, the paint marker leaves a nice matte finish; an opaque mark that is permanent and light-fast. Artist will find they can create giant size calligraphy with the larger markers.

  • Cohas Modified  30mm

This type of marker only removes with Windex, Zig Posterman Cleaner or most whiteboard cleaners. The Windex must have ammonia to work.  The chemical properties needed in the cleaner for removal is a pH of 10 or higher.

The waterproof paint marker is compatible with dry erase and wet erase markers on the same board.  When removing the dry erase marker with an eraser, the waterproof mark will not remove.

Other Waterproof paint markers offered by Zig Posterman include Woodcraft and Acrylista, both of these are the same formulation as the Zig Posterman Waterproof but offer more colors.

 Wet-Wipe Paint Marker

Used on glass, plastic, blackboards, stone, whiteboards and any non-porous surface, these paint markers will always come off with a damp cloth or sponge.

Often used for menus in restaurants or special boards, they are easy to change.  Just wash away the item you would like to change.

Typical Applications

  • Store Signs
  • POP displays
  • Table, Counter or Bar Top displays
  • Arts and Crafts when easy removal is required
  • Child artwork on counters or glass
  • Chalk Board Art
  • White Board for easy to use, “erase when dry” applications
  • Menu Boards
  • Wedding and Function Message Boards
  • Kitchen Menu Boards
  • Family Calendar and Activity Board

Use as a Dry Erase Marker?

The most often used search on Cohas.com is “Wide Dry-Erase Marker”. The question is, can the wide Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe marker be used on a dry erase board?

In one word, yes!

The wet-wipe Zig Posterman (along with the Illumigraph) is the most like a dry erase marker. It is however very opaque, unlike a dry erase marker. The mark will be bold and strong on your boards, not transparent and thin.  Simply removed with water and a damp cloth or sponge.   It will not damage your whiteboard and always clean completely off your board.

Sizes Available

  • Bullet Tip 2mm
  • Broad Chisel 6mm
  • Big and Broad 15mm
  • Biggie 30 30mm (Black and White Only) Other Colors Factory discontinued January 2017

Looking for a wide marker to use on your IdeaPaint walls? The Wet-Wipe is a great option and can be cleaned with a damp cloth or sponge.  This will remove the marks even if your surface has slight defects in it.

The wet-wipe should not be used outdoors since it will come off in the rain.  It does take 1-2 minutes to dry, not as fast as a dry erase marker.  The Zig Posterman Wet-Wipe will come off cleaner than dry erase markers from dry erase boards. We have never seen staining on a white board that happens with poor quality dry erase markers.

 Zig Illumigraph Paint Marker

This is the same ink type as Wet-Wipe in how it functions.  The colors are very fluorescent, especially under black-light, lights at night or on a LED board. Dark surfaces look best with this product. The appearance can be described as a true neon line when on a lighted board like a back-lit menu board or a LED Flashing Board.

This paint marker will not damage your acrylic menu board surface and can be removed by rubbing with a soft cloth. Any stubborn marks, or if the item you are using it on has scratches or micro scratching, can be removed with a damp sponge or cloth.

Zig Illumigraph Markers work very well with Dry Erasers

When used on your boards, there’s no need to take them down to change them. Unlike the inexpensive markers, these high quality paint markers will not run when you load the tip. No more dripping and dribbling down the board!

If your LED Flashing board came with markers, you will not believe the performance of the Zig Illumigraph markers when you replace them. Not only are the marks cleaner and brighter, they are also available in wider sizes allowing for big bold messages!

Typical Applications

  • Blacklight Environments
  • LED Flashing Boards
  • Table, Counter or Bar Top displays on Black Backgrounds
  • Chalk Board Art
  • Blackboard Chalk Marker for Easy to Use, “Erase When Dry” Applications
  • Menu Boards
  • Wedding and Function Message Boards Super Bright on Dark Surfaces
  • Nightclub, Hotel, Restaurant and Lounge Displays

Once dry, the marks are easy to change; perfect for price changes or changing the special of the day on your message board.

The Zig Illumigraph Marker should not be used outdoors since it will come off in the rain. The marker is water based ink with a pigment; use care around energized electronic devices. Unplug your LED Flashing or Light Board before use and allow ink to dry.  Follow the manufactures recommendation on your writing surfaces.

Dry Erase ~ Wet Erase Tip

The Zig Posterman Illumigraph works well on Dry Erase Boards and menu boards, then when dry is removed with a soft cloth or fiber eraser.  You should always let the “ink” dry 1-2 minutes before removing.  This will keep from smearing the marks that you have made on the board.  If the marks do not come off your board it may have a softer surface than most whiteboards, in this case a damp cloth will clean away the marks with no damage to the board.

While the markers do not have the typical “Expo Colors” try the red, orange and violet markers on your whiteboard.  The marks will turn to dust when you wipe them.

Zig Posterman markers come in sizes from a fine tip to a full two inches wide.  They are paint markers filled with a water pigment paint with no odor or volatile organic compounds.  Since they are paint based markers they have a small ball inside the barrel to mix the paint.  They also have a valve at the bottom in order to keep the paint from flowing out of the marker until you need it.  You must prime Zig Posterman marker before it is used.

This video shows the larger markers offered here on the Zig Posterman website.  The two easy steps to starting the marker are demonstrated, shake, press and draw!

Before the markers are loaded some closeups of the Zig Posterman Markers are shown. View the HD video at 1080p on full screen to see the tip details.  Note the caps to the top of the markers in the image the large Zigs have white rubber seals that snap around the plastic tip to keep the ink (paint) from drying out once you open and prime your marker.  The Broad and Big & Broad have two-step seals that snap on when you close the cap.

Just a big bold note on the car window, or the price on a real good deal, paint markers are a great solution to tell others you are ready to sell! Available in different sizes, you don’t have to be an expert to letter or decorate your motor vehicle windows. Car Dealer Paint Markers come in many colors and sizes here at Cohas Systems, the most used are those larger than 15mm.

The markers used on this car included the 5/8 of an inch (15mm) Big and Broad Zig Posterman Marker and the Biggie 30.  The Big and Broad paint marker was used to draw the year and other white text. The Biggie 30 was used to create the price listed in red.

Honda Pilot for Sale using Zig Posterman Car Dealer Paint MarkersThe Big and Broad has a wide tip with an edge that is about 1/4 inch  wide.  The wide tip was used to draw the text, “Honda Pilot” in one stroke.  The edge of the white marker was used to create the keys.  To make the year, about three strokes were used to create the one inch wide letters.  The ink takes about a minute to dry, and can be drawn over, or next to without affecting the original marks.

Changes can be made while the mark is wet by rubbing with your finger or a paper towel.

The red price was made with the short barrel 1 1/4 inch (30mm) marker.  By holding the back of the container in your palm you can create clean wide numbers, letters and symbols.

With this car the tinted windows work well with the lighter colored markers.  The marks will not come off in the rain, they can only be removed with Windex cleaner.

Technical staff here at Cohas Chalkboard and Marker Systems helped out on answers.yahoo.com and answered the following question.  Our answer was selected the best last week.  It was about professional pigment paint markers.

If you have a technical question ask it here in the comments, or send it to us on our Contact Page, we would be happy to help.  If we have not done the testing to provide a good answer we will add that to our labs list of items to test for you.

Need some pro pigment paint markers?

Okay so I like to make graphic designs both on the computer and off, but all I have found are prisma colors, paint markers, and something else. I am looking for intense, and I mean vivid colors that don’t allow overlap streaks showing (like how with an expo if you draw a line going one way on paper and then reverse the direction going slightly more diagonal, and then you are left with a dark square where you went back).

  • I want it to be all glossy like spray paint, but I need it well controlled.
  • Need something that doesn’t strip down the more you draw and mix (like chunks of it).
  • Looking for a variety of sizes so you can make clean cut edges on round edges.
  • And most of all, I want something that doesn’t just lose its color when it dries and one that doesn’t dry out in like 5 minutes from just excessive drawing.

I even went to an art marker testing store but only had 5 minutes because I had to run. So what marker brand and model are out there like this and if you can, please tell me some good paper that works with this. Cost is only an issue if its like more than 100 bucks.

pigment paint markers Zig Posterman Paint Markers sound like a solution except for one of your requirements. They are water based pigment markers. The mark is opaque and can be drawn over after it dries. They are normally used on non porous material, where they are semi-permanent, when you use them on paper they are not removable. On Glass or plastic they come of with Windex or any ammonia based cleaner.

They come in a number of sizes, from extra fine point half mm through 50mm that’s 2 inches wide!

They are pigment paint markers, UV stable, and will not fade in the sun, this is because of the pigment (ground up powder) used in the “ink” paint marker. The tip is loaded by pressing down on the marker to open a valve, this keeps it from drying out as you draw. A video is on the website cited in the sources that shows how that works.  “How to Load a Zig Posterman Marker

We have not tested with many different paper types, we will do that in the future.

Artist Tip!

Zig Posterman Paint markers can be blended when wet for dramatic results useful in three dimensional renderings and representation.  When dry they can be drawn over with no damage to the marks you have made. You will also see no change in color to those marks you have made.

They do make a mat finish not gloss as you requested, other than that they may work for you. You can spray a fixative or clear spray paint over it to make it glossy when complete. You can also laminate it with a gloss laminate. Heat laminate or pressure laminate works fine.

Full disclosure, I work in the Cohas Chalkboard & Marker Systems lab that tests these products for distribution in the US. Providing information for application stories at the company that sells them. We do test other markers POSCA would provide similar results to what I have outlined. Other markers we have tested like wet erase or dye based markers would have the problems.
