In March, it was announced that the Woodcraft waterproof markers were being reintroduced as the Acrylista marker line.  At this time, we also learned that some colors were being discontinued. Due to a large customer uproar, the manufacturer agreed to a limited distribution of the discontinued colors in the 6mm and 15mm Woodcraft line. Because many of our chalkboard artists “love all of the Woodcraft colors and honestly wish there were more!” this comes as great news.

Therefore, we can once again offer chalkboard artists the variety of colors they need. The Cohas color collection of waterproof chalk markers have become very popular with chalkboard artists at grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, and breweries. As a result, artists can choose from a blend of colors like Wild Rose, Forest Green, Golden Yarrow, Honeysuckle, Salsa Verde, and Victorian Blue. As a result, the continued production of these markers means chalkboard artists will now have a wide selection of colors to create realistic portrayals of fruits, vegetables and other graphics.

The increasingly popular Woodcraft markers are becoming a thing of the past. Soon, the Woodcraft markers will be replaced by Acrylista product line. Although the new markers are just a rebranded version of the Woodcraft, customers can expect some changes.

Woodcraft Markers will be Replaced by Acrylista Product Line; the 6mm Woodcraft marker shown alongside the 6mm Acrylista marker for a comparison of the old and new marker lines.

Why So Popular

The Woodcraft markers have become popular with chalkboard artists at grocery stores like Whole Foods, Fareway, Safeway, and New Seasons. Available in up to 50 colors, designers could choose from artistic colors like Moss Green, Honeysuckle, and Victorian Blue. The wide selection let artists create realistic portrayals of fruits, vegetables and other produce.

Here at Cohas.com, our artists used the Woodcraft colors to create in-house artwork and the art for our custom products. Our popular Custom Pineapple Slate Board is made with a variety of the Woodcraft colors.

What’s the Same

Though the marker line is going through some changes, there are a few key features that will be the same. First of all, inside the marker, the waterproof ink will be the same formula. Still guaranteeing a semi-permanent bond, the ink will only be removable with Windex or an ammonia based cleaner. And barrel sizes will not change, so the markers will hold the same amount of ink.

Additionally, the marker will still come in the 6mm Broad Chisel and 15mm Big and Broad sizes that artists have come to love. And the changes will not come at a price increase. Acrylista markers will be the same price as the Woodcraft markers in both sizes.

What’s New

First and foremost, the factory is dropping some of the colors they offer in both the tips sizes. In the 6mm Woodcraft line, the factory once offered as many as 31 artistic colors. This number will decline to just 20 Arcylista colors. For the 15mm Woodcraft marker, there was once 25 artistic colors available. This has dropped now to 18 colors.

Here’s a breakdown of the colors that will remain and disappear:

Although calligraphy is often created with a pen or brush, high school English teacher Cale Borne is breaking the mold. He has learned how to write calligraphy with Zig Posterman markers. And Cale is inspiring his students by sharing his talent on his classroom chalkboard.

Cale wanted markers with wide tips that he could use for his calligraphy. He found the Zig Posterman BIGGIE and Big and Broad markers. “These markers are awesome,” says Cale. “I had this big blackboard in my room that was utterly useless unless I wanted to douse myself in chalk dust everyday.”

Cale Borne has leared to write calligraphy with Zig Posterman markers; the words British Romanticism appear on her classroom chalkboard in calligraphic lettering

Traditionally, calligraphy is created using a pen and ink or brush and ink combination. Artists create the ancient lettering by dipping their nibs or brushes into the ink and drawing it across the paper in artistic strokes.

A close up of British that Cale Borne wrote in calligraphy with Zig Posterman markersUsing a similar method, Cale can write calligraphy with Zig Posterman markers. Because the marker has a rectangle tip, he can create varying line widths. This allows him to mimic the strokes that are common with calligraphy. He uses the width of the tip for broader lines, and the edge and corners create thin lines and curls.

“My kids love the lettering I do for their notes and lessons,” states Cale. As a result, he’s able to inspire his students to learn calligraphy. “Several students over the past 2 years have even taken up calligraphy as a hobby after seeing the stuff on my board. I was able to show them something they probably wouldn’t have been exposed too, and that they found something creative to practice and get disciplined with.”

Did you know?
Contemporary calligraphy is defined as “the art of giving form to signs in an expressive, harmonious, and skillful manner.”¹ It began as a standard in handwriting with the development of Latin script in 600 BC. However, it has since become a popular art in writing eloquently. Calligraphy is therefore commonly used for wedding and event invitations, hand-lettered logo designs, religious art, graphic design and commissioned art, and memorial documents.

Want to know how you can write calligraphy with Zig Posterman markers?

Cale used the Big and Broad 15mmBIGGIE 30mm, and BIGGIE 50mm tip markers to create calligraphic lettering. Customers can use both waterproof and wet-wipe markers for these projects. Although it is recommended that waterproof is used where retracing or color overlap may occur.

In Portland, Oregon there is a cafe called Little River Cafe, owned by Thierry Pasquiou. A little over a year ago Thierry purchased an A-Frame chalkboard with regular chalk to advertise his specials. The cafe was looking for a sidewalk sign to draw people in. As some would know, the weather in Oregon is usually rainy, so you could imagine what his A-frame board looked like on those rainy days!  As Theirry said, “Every time it rained it got washed away or on nice busy days, some kids would brush their fingers and ruined the nice hand writing.”  The Little River Cafe needed waterproof chalk markers.  They just had no idea they were even available.

Cafe Sign with Waterproof Chalk Markers

Thierry was ready to give up and buy a completely different frame that he could use with markers. Then he came across our website Cohas.com, and couldn’t be happier.  “Not only you can use them on real chalkboards, they are truly weather resistant, the Oregon weather has proved it. The rain actually makes them even shinier… proof that it works!” Waterproof Zig markers will only wash off with an ammonia based cleaner. This resulted in no worries about the rain or kids wiping off his sign. Theirry even overheard a couple walking by talking about the Pumpkin Spice latte. It was advertised on his sign and they walked right in to order. If the chalk he had been using had been wiped off, the customers might have never stopped in to taste the delicious drink.

Cohas and the Little River Cafe

At Cohas Marker and Chalkboard Systems are happy that we were able to provide him a waterproof chalk markers. It was a bonus to keep his beautiful sidewalk sign and save him from having to buy a whole new product.  We appreciate the time Theirry took to write to us and wish him the best with his cafe!

There are many different reasons to create beautiful, fun and quirky signs and many types of medium to use. This video is of John Neal, a chalkboard artist in the United Kingdom.  He  is creating a sign to thank his fans with a Chalkboard Sign for helping him reach one thousand followers on YouTube.

John uses 3 different colors of Zig Posterman Markers for his sign- white, red, and black, in the 30mm size tip. He squeezes a little of each paint into a container to use them with a paint brush. He also mixes together a little white and red to make pink.

Thank You Chalkboard Sign

John starts by using the white Zig Posterman paint with a paint brush to write out the words “There is No” and underneath he writes the words “THEM & US” in block lettering. He goes back to the words at the top to touch them up and add in a little shading. Going back to the words “THEM & US”, he uses his paint brush dipped in red paint this time, painting in the top one third of each letter. He quickly uses a hairdryer to dry the red before continuing. Next, he uses some of the pink paint he mixed up to paint more letters before painting the last with white.

ALERT New Product for Making a Chalkboard Sign

FChalkboard Sign Paint Pots in 12 New Colorsor years John Neal has been “milking” Zig Posterman waterproof markers to obtain the chalkboard paint from them.  In January of 2017 we now have available Zig Posterman Paint Pots!
These paint pots are a collection of liquid chalk paints that come in many different colors. Each pot contains same premium quality ink found in the Zig Posterman Waterproof markers.  Manufactured and imported from Kuretake Co of Japan. The paint provides a quality liquid ink for your artwork that can be used pure, or mixed together for your own unique colors! They can be used on all Cohas products, as well as classic chalkboards, plastic, metal, glass, and more.

Available in 12 colors including some of the favorites used by chalkboard artists at Whole Foods.  Salsa Verde, English Cucumber, Buttercup and more ready for your brushwork!

When he finishes painting the block letters he uses a smaller white Zig Posterman Marker, but this time re-outline and fill in some spots. He then takes a black 2mm woodcraft marker to separate the the letters. Since the chalkboard is black, John is able to go over any mistakes he might have made.

Before finishing, John adds just a couple more details. He uses his paint brush again with a little more white paint to create two stars. He does this by painting a small circle and smudging the paint with his finger and adding a few criss-crossed lines to become stars.

Be sure to watch the video below to see the techniques John Neal used for his sign.
