Over the years of providing quality chalk markers, we’ve had a number of questions from customers. One of the most common we get is, “How can I get my chalk marker working again?” Oftentimes, the Extra Fine 0.5mm Marker causes issues for our chalk artists and customers. This marker has a unique valve system compared to the other markers in the Zig Posterman line. It is very easy to over-prime the marker, and flood the tip. The material of the tip is also different from the other marker types, so it gets blocked and dries up easily.

From facing this problem ourselves, to offering tips to our customers on how to work through the issue, we’ve developed this how-to guide. Read on to learn how to save your chalk marker.

How Can I Get My Chalk Marker Working Again?

What NOT to Do

First of all, don’t panic!

Secondly, don’t over-prime your marker. This just causes a mess on your fingers, markers, and, worst of all, projects. It can cause the marker valve to flood and leak.

Thirdly, don’t order a new one (yet!). You could run into the same problem if you don’t understand why it happened.

Finally, don’t get discouraged! You can fix your marker!

What You Should Do Instead

1. Prepare a surface that you don’t mind getting ink on.
   This could be paper towels, newspaper, or even an old desk (ours look pretty cool scarred with ink marks from projects-past).
2. On your prepared surface, remove the cap and the entire tip section from the barrel.
   This section includes a silver piece with a point over a long, skinny white piece.
   

   Step 2: Remove the entire tip section from the barrel of the marker.

3. Thoroughly clean the tip and the inside of barrel.
   It’s okay to use paper towels and Windex or cleaner for this step. Be careful not to push the paper towel too far into the barrel, as this can cause the valve to activate.  You can also place the plastic barrel under a slow stream of water to flush out the excess ink.
   

   Step 3: Thoroughly clean the marker tip and inside of the barrel.

4. Once clean, use your fingernail to soften the very tip of the marker.
   Gently bend the tip of the marker back and forth to loosen it. This should free any blockage in the tip and allow ink to flow into it again when you put the marker back together.
   

   Step 4: Gently use your fingernail to soften the tip and loosen any dried ink inside.

5. Once the tip is soft, replace it back into the barrel of the marker.
6. Prime the marker like usual, pressing the tip straight down into the barrel and holding for a few seconds.
   Some leaking may still occur around the silver tip.
   

   Step 6: Prime the marker like usual, pressing straight down and holding for a few seconds.

7. If leaking occurs, wipe it away with a paper towel and very gently bend the tip against your surface.
8. Prime the marker again, holding only for a few seconds.
   Attempt to write on your surface.
9. Continue this process of wiping, bending, priming, and testing the marker every few seconds until the marker begins to write properly.
