The Zig Illumigraph chalk markers, also called paint markers, have some interesting properties that many people may never discover. These UV markers change completely from their daylight colors when displayed under a black light.
Activating the Glow
During manufacturing, the company adds a safe chemical that is energized by ultraviolet (UV) lights. This is what makes the markers so bright under black lights and on LED flashing board signs. Customers won’t find that in the regular wet-wipe markers!
Where to use UV Markers
Some of our customers that use black lights, like pubs, clubs, and dance venues, will order the markers to decorate their facility. One even sells the markers to their patrons, and invites them to write messages and decorate their walls. Typically, the 15mm broad tip UV markers are popular for this application.
Here in the office we use the Zig Illumigraph markers on our chalkboard products and indoor projects. Since it is a wet-wipe marker, it removes easily with a wet cloth or sponge. The colors are opaque compared to dry erase markers, and look great on blackboards.
Vibrant Colors
The Zig Illumigraph markers come in eight colors. They are often used without consideration of how they will react to the black light. However, as you can see, each color glows and reacts differently depending on the light!
In daylight, the markers look colorful and bright. Add UV light, though, and watch the colors spring off the surface!

What a difference! This is the same board under different lighting, written in UV markers. The left is the board in daylight, while the right shows the board illuminated with a black light.
